New to 2019

SUUSI Promises: Gather at the Nurture Tent during Community Time on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday for a conversation about the sacred promises we need to make with one another to live fully into SUUSI’s mission. How can we invoke the best in ourselves and share personal freedom in a way that is safe and supportive for everyone in our community?

Scavenger Hunt:  When you visit the three SUUSI Services locations – the SUUSI Office, the SUUSI Store, and the Artisans’ Bazaar, get your scavenger hunt card punched – you could win gift certificates from the Store and the Bazaar!

Hillside Grind: SUUSI has a fabulous new programming location this year! Hillside Grind is a large, comfortable coffeehouse space located right next door to Noble dorm and up the hill from Blue Ridge and the Community Time quad. It will host BBQUUSI, the Late Night Song Circle, and a variety of social and food- or alcohol-oriented workshops. Pick up a SUUSI map at Check-in for the exact location.

Accessibility Liaison: SUUSI values the inclusion of people of all ability levels. Contact our new Access Liaison, Parker Appel, via the SUUSI Office or via access@suusi.org if accessibility issues arise during any SUUSI event, or if your housing assignment does not meet your requested access needs.

Co-Op Dorm Requirements: Starting this year, all adults in the co-op dorm must complete a criminal background check. You should have received an email from Annsley Van Buskirk (director-emeritus@suusi.org) with instructions for how to submit your information. This must be done as far in advance as possible. If you do not submit your background check in time for it to clear before SUUSI, your family will be re-assigned to the non-co-op dorm. There will be no exceptions.

Community Meals: New this year, we’re offering smaller-scale dining experiences in Brown Dining Hall. Capped at 125 people, Community Meals offer a chance for intentional connection and community-building. Meals are available for Newcomers, Families, LGBTQ+, and Young Adults/Medians affinity groups – plus there is one meal that is open to all! Community Meals are free, but preregistration is required. If you did not preregister, you may add a Community Meal to your schedule at Check- in on Sunday.

Solo at SUUSI: Whether you’re single full-time or your partner doesn’t attend SUUSI, it can be nice to meet others in the same circumstances. We’ve got two options for you – choose between the family mixer or the 18+ mixer.

  • Bringing your kids to SUUSI as a solo parent can be an exhausting experience – yet many of us wouldn’t trade it for the world. On Monday from 4:15-5:15, meet other solo parents at Community Time. While the kids take part in all the games and activities Community Time has to offer, adults will trade tips and contact info. Experienced solo-at-SUUSI parents will host.
  • If you’re over 18, join other adults at Hillside Grind on Monday from 4:15 – 5:15 pm to meet some new people. Use this time to have deep (or not) conversations, make connections for the rest of the week, exchange contact information, or set up other times to get together.

SUUSI Explorers: Whether this is your first SUUSI or your tenth, you might sometimes find yourself unsure about diving in to the social scene. SUUSI Explorers is a new program that will offer a hosted tour of some of the best SUUSI has to offer. Whether you’re playing a friendly game of volleyball or sipping coffee in Common Ground, you can always expect to be welcomed into a group of people open to making new friends. We plan to have at least two hosted activities per day during SUUSI week, so if one isn’t quite your speed, another is sure to be! Watch the SUUSI NUUS for daily details, or look for the SUUSI Explorers schedule at suusi.org.

Teen Tubing: The entire Teen Dorm will be hitting the river on Monday afternoon. Be sure to pack a bathing suit and towel, as well as shoes that can get wet. You’ll find the Nature-staff approved shoe list here: https://www.suusi.org/shoes-for-nature-trips/
