Flying Wild Part 1

Join Becky Skiba of the NC Wildlife Resources Commission to learn more about birds in your area. We will learn how to bird using all the tips and tricks in the book and some that aren’t. Birding by habitat and local hotspots is a great way to learn the birds that are present there during a certain season and highlight resident and migrant species. We will develop an ear for and listen for a few bird calls to recall when you get to go birding. We will also discuss many resources that will help you hone your identification skills such as field guides, Merlin app, eBird, and more. Binocular basics, what to wear and bring on a casual birding trip, and time of day are all factors to consider when you want to get the best looks at our feathered friends. Want to bird closer to home? Let’s dive into some different plants, landscaping design ideas and bird foods that will increase visitation and be a welcome stop for migrants on their long journeys each year. Learning the passing of time by bird species is a lot more fun than noticing the hours of daylight or thickness of our coats. Join us to learn how to have fun outside and find out about birding trips near you throughout the year. This course and all resources provided are free of charge. This is a two-part zoom series that will include some independent birding and some fun games to help you learn, remember and enjoy! The zoom sessions will be recorded. Part two, will be on Wednesday July 21. Register for 841.Becky Skiba//Coastal Regional Education SpecialistWildlife Education Division

Using Science to Learn History

The Bacton Altar Cloth, a rare embroidery that might have been Queen Elizabeth I's gown, was recently conserved and put on display at Hampton Court Palace. It is covered with large detailed images of plants and many smaller images of animals, but what plants are they? Were they common in Elizabethan gardens, or recently arrived in England? Using our botanical sleuthing skills we'll try to identify as many species as we can. We will discuss the history of this object, show detailed photos of it and of Elizabethan books that might have inspired its design, and try to imagine how this beautiful silk, silver, and gold artwork was used. See: bacstitch.org Challe Hudson, an independent researcher in London, UK. She focuses on the history of 15th and 16th century dress and textiles, & the fashion on church monuments.

Let's Talk Nature 2

Here, all paths are welcome - nature is all around us, all of the time. We want to share in YOUR nature! Pick a favorite bike ride and film part of it. Take a hike to your favorite spot and share the panoramic vistas or the plants along the trail. Live near the beach and like to surf? Show us! The sky is the limit. Bring photographs, videos, and/or a narration of a trip that you’ve recently experienced on your own. You should plan on having enough material to share in a small group for about 3 or 4 minutes during our time together. Specific technical information to help you share your files will be sent out once registration is closed.
